The Numbness Wall Worksheet
When life starts life-ing, for some of us, our emotional default is to become numb. Emotional numbness, or blunting, is a psychological response to overwhelming anxiety, grief, trauma, chronic stress, and other triggers.
Emotional numbness is a protective mechanism that can step in to make it easier to do the daily work of survival without having our trauma, anxiety, or grief at the forefront of our minds 24/7.
Still, there may come a time when we begin to notice that numbness has more than one function in our lives. At times, it not only protects us, but, if we are engaged in deeply personal self-care work, such as trauma therapy, we may also begin to notice that numbness can become a barrier.
This worksheet helps illustrate both sides of emotional numbness and invites clients to cultivate greater awareness of what their numbness protects them from, and what it might be getting in the way of. It provides space to explore these questions with self-compassion and genuine curiosity about oneself.
